Walking tours of downtown Kalamazoo breweries - West Michigan Beer ToursWest Michigan Beer Tours

Join us at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 for a homebrew walking tour. We will be visiting and touring the home breweries of three of our MASH members who live in Maplewood.

Our first stop will be at the home of Ken Zlotnick, who recently joined MASH and knocked it out of the park with his first batch of homebrew, which he shared with the club as part of our July Club Only Competition.

The second stop on the tour is a short couple of block’s away at the home of board member, Eric Blaine. We’ll see Eric’s indoor electric setup, his sour barrel program, and his bar, which he inherited from former MASH member Bruce Barton.

We’ll then walk about a mile to our last stop at the Johnson Brewery, headed up by MASH board member Chris Johnson. Chris will show us around his basement and outdoor brew areas.

Join us to see how three of our brewer’s craft their malty and hoppy creations and sample some homebrew at each stop. More details and addresses will be posted in Slack.

Our Sensory Analysis Happy Hour at 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 30. This month we will be tasting three Oktoberfests in preparation for our October Club-Only Competition:Sierra Nevada OktoberfestAshton Brewing Festus HaggenTBD (A Classic German Example will be selected at the next education committee meeting)Stay tuned for details on Slack

Oktober Club-Only Competition (CoC)
Our October meeting will feature our next CoC. The style is Mocktoberfest and to make things even more interesting, we are all brewing from the same recipe.
 Mocktoberfest:
An Oktoberfest style beer brewed with an ale yeast instead of a lager yeast.

Rules:
1. Use the official competition all-grain or extract Mocktoberfest recipes (see link below) to brew your best Mocktoberfest.
2. Match ingredients and recipe parameters where possible, but adjust as needed for your system or availability.  For example, increase or decrease base malt to match target starting gravity.  Scale for batch size.  Adjust hops to match IBU targets based on your specific alpha.  Any generic bittering hop variety will suffice given 60min boil time.
3. Brewers can select any ale or kviek yeast of their choosing for fermentation. No lager yeasts are allowed.
4. Try to stick to the published recipe where possible. Note any differences for discussion at the meeting (after judging). Especially note yeast selection and fermentation conditions.
5. Entrants must provide about 64 oz of your beer at the Oktober meeting for judging. Both bottles and growlers will be accepted. (E.g. 6 pack, growler, 3 bombers)
6. If you have questions, reach out to the board for help.
7. Above all else, have fun and follow the brewers code.

Recipe details and contest rules can be found here.

Get Your Beer Judged by a BJCP Judge
One of the perks of being a MASH member is having access to a long list of accomplished BJCP judges. If you would like some anonymous and objective feedback on your beer, conact Board Member Eric Blaine, to arrange to have one of our BJCP judges evaluate your beer and provide you with a scoresheet and feedback.
