You can brew any BJCP-style beer as long as the ABV is 4.5 % or less. There are not a huge amount of styles that would qualify, but there are certainly enough to make this an interesting competition. April 2023: Based on helpful feedback we received at the June Members Only Meeting, we are announcing this well in advance. The first Club only Competiton of next year will be ANY style lager. We plan to have a Sensory Analysis session featuring lagers early in the year to get everyone psyched for the April competition. Start your planning Now!! Multiple Homebrew Club activity: We are planning an inter-club bottle share and picnic for late August or early September with several of the other homebrew clubs in northern New Jersey. At this time, our preference is for Saturday, September 10th from 1 pm to 5 pm. The location would be the picnic area at Sunrise Lake in Lewis Morris Park in Morristown (where we held our July 2021 Club Only Competition). This is all subject to availability. Pencil in the date. MASH Competition Committee feedback: Starting with the August monthly meeting, we plan to have an expansive BJCP Confessional session. Anyone who wants to participate with an entry from the State Fair competition should contact Steve Hocken directly on Slack AFTER the competition is over. For those participating, plan to bring a growler or 6-pack of your beer for tasting and your score sheets from the competition. As long as there is at least one other homebrewer’s beer for you to take along with your own, MASH will reimburse you $1 for each entry that you drive to a drop-off location. Just coordinate prior to your departure date and keep one of the Board members in the loop. BJCP Confessional program: As a way of providing (what we hope will be) useful feedback to any MASH member who enters a beer (or mead or cider) in a homebrew competition, we have put together a new interactive exercise. Following a competition, the MASH member can bring in their scoresheet, recipe, and a bottle of beer to get feedback from one of our BJCP judges. We will tweak the procedure along the way if necessary. Initially, we view this as a way to take the place of the Online Beer Scores anonymous beer evaluations. But it could grow to become an entire meeting later in the year if enough competition participants are interested in sharing. |
