The Art and Science of Beer Flavor with Angry Erik’s Head Brewer Heide
Think about the last time you perused a draft list at your local bar. How did you decide what to order?
The name and each descriptive line provokes a memory and sensory experience that helps your brain reach a decision. A beer with local honey may jump out at you if you recently started keeping bees. If you prefer sweeter, rich malty beers, you probably won’t order the hop bomb. Add to that the other countless other tiny experiences — like what you ate for lunch or what you’re ordering to nosh on along with your beer — that make one beer seem more appealing than the next.
Angry Erik’s Head Brewer Heide will lead us at our July meeting in an interactive demonstration to show how environmental influences affect the way our palate and mind “taste” beer.
Important note: You’re welcome to bring homebrew to share but please no sour beers (no wild yeast, pediococcus, lactobacillus, brettanomyces). You may also bring a bite to eat or order delivery from a local restaurant. Bonus points if you bring your MASH glass for sampling! Come as early as 6:30 p.m. to hang out, meet and greet old friends and new while exploring what’s on tap at Angry Erik.
Also available, as usual, are MASH member homebrew and water evaluations.
