President’s Message

Join us at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 19 for an in-person meeting at Twin Elephant. We will be hosting our October Club-Only Competition (CoC). MASH brewers all brewed a Mock-tober Fest beer using a standard recipe provided by the club (details below). We’ll be tasting all of the examples and crowning a winner. Based on our previous CoC, where MASH brewers all brewed a pale ale based on a standardized recipe, this stands to be a very interesting competition with lots of high quality entries and difficult judging choices.

Once the CoC winner is crowned, stay a while to catch up with friends, share some homebrew, and have a pint from Twin Elephant. This will be our first return to Twin Elephant since early 2019 and we cannot wait to see everyone together at our old stomping grounds!

Our next Sensory Analysis Happy Hour will be at 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 28. We will be going on a beer exploration of the differences between American Stout and American Porter. To take us on this learning journey we will be tasting through Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout and Robust Porter and Sierra Nevada’s Stout and Porter

Motown MASH Announcements
We have numerous volunteer opportunities for Motown MASH where the club needs your help and support:

Food Coordinator for In-Person Judging:
We need help organizing breakfast and lunch for the judges and competition staff. Typically this involves buying a cold breakfast and a hot lunch and getting it setup for the judges. You will be supported in this work by Eric Blaine, the competition organizer.

Bottle Sort Volunteers:
Our bottle sort is on Sunday, October 24th at Noon at Ashton Brewing. We are looking for volunteers to come help organize, anonymize, and box up all of the entries for the competition. If you are able, we are also looking for folding tables and beer case boxes to use for the sort.

Judges and Stewards:
We are still in need of judges and stewards for in-person judging on November 6th. For those interested in judging, but not BJCP certified, we can pair you with an experienced judge. For those interested in learning more about judging or how competitions are run, stewarding is a great way to learn. Stewards are a vital part of a successful competition.

Oktober Club-Only Competition (CoC)
Our October meeting will feature our next CoC. The style is Mocktoberfest and to make things even more interesting, we are all brewing from the same recipe.
 Mocktoberfest:
An Oktoberfest style beer brewed with an ale yeast instead of a lager yeast.

Rules:
1. Use the official competition all-grain or extract Mocktoberfest recipes (see link below) to brew your best Mocktoberfest.
2. Match ingredients and recipe parameters where possible, but adjust as needed for your system or availability.  For example, increase or decrease base malt to match target starting gravity.  Scale for batch size.  Adjust hops to match IBU targets based on your specific alpha.  Any generic bittering hop variety will suffice given 60min boil time.
3. Brewers can select any ale or kviek yeast of their choosing for fermentation. No lager yeasts are allowed.
4. Try to stick to the published recipe where possible. Note any differences for discussion at the meeting (after judging). Especially note yeast selection and fermentation conditions.
5. Entrants must provide about 64 oz of your beer at the Oktober meeting for judging. Both bottles and growlers will be accepted. (E.g. 6 pack, growler, 3 bombers)
6. If you have questions, reach out to the board for help.
7. Above all else, have fun and follow the brewers code.

Recipe details and contest rules can be found here.

Get Your Beer Judged by a BJCP Judge
One of the perks of being a MASH member is having access to a long list of accomplished BJCP judges. If you would like some anonymous and objective feedback on your beer, conact Board Member Eric Blaine, to arrange to have one of our BJCP judges evaluate your beer and provide you with a scoresheet and feedback.
